Adult Activities at Southwick Public Library

Adult Book Discussion Group will meet in the Southwick Public Library’s Community Room to discuss the book The Alice Network by Kate Quinn on April 3 at 1:30 p.m. in the library’s Community Room. After the meeting, the book Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman, which will be discussed at the May 1 book discussion, will be available for sale. Participants do not need to purchase the book. Books are available through interlibrary loan.

 

National Library Week: National Library Week is April 7- 13. The theme of library week for 2019 is Libraries = Strong Communities! Your local library offers free access to books, DVDs, music CDs, books on CDs, magazines and museum passes. We also offer online resources for your family and a business center that helps support your career goals and to help support entrepreneurship. Our library offer opportunities to all our patrons. The library will conduct its annual survey the week of April 8-13 and April 15-20. A small gift will be given to those that complete the survey. Information collected from our annual surveys was instrumental in the creation of the library’s new 5-Year Strategic Plan. A copy of our plan may be found online atwww.southwickma.org/library. In April starting on the 7ththere will also be a copy of our survey on this website which you may print. You will need to turn in your completed, printed survey at the library.

 

Socrates’ Café: This group had its inaugural meeting in March. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 16 in the Southwick Public Library’s Community Room at 6:30 p.m. The topic this month is “Is truth absolute or relative”. The group is facilitated by David Meczywor. Socrates Café is an opportunity for ordinary people to wrestle with the Big Questions, in a discussion. Alternative viewpoints are encouraged and explored. All discussion takes place in an atmosphere of respect and encouragement. People from all walks of life, are encouraged to attend and contribute their unique views.

 

Adult Color, Chat & Cookies will meet on Monday April 22 at 6:30 at the Southwick Public Library. This group is open to all adults. There is no fee for this program. All materials are supplied as well as cookies, tea, and coffee. No registration is required. This is a stress-free and fun activity. It doesn’t matter if you do more chatting than coloring!

 

Southwick Public Library’s Adult Cookbook Club will meet on April 23 at 6:30 p.m.; Cookbook Club will be sampling recipes they made from the cookbook Christopher Kimball’s Milk Street: the New Home Cooking. Recipes are connected to the PBS popular cooking program Milk Street. Prior to the meeting on Tuesday, April 23, please email ([email protected]) with the subject Cookbook Club your first two choices of the recipe you’d like to make. The library will contact you to let you know which recipe to bring or if you need to make another selection. This helps to prevent us from having duplicate items being prepared. New adult members are always welcome to pick-up a cookbook and sign-up at the Circulation Desk. Please be advised: Neither the food served at cookbook club, and prepared in home kitchens, nor the facilities have been inspected by the state or the local public health agency.

 

Cottage Garden Colors Presentation: The Southwick Public Library is pleased to have Sally Killips present her Cottage Garden Colors program on Wednesday, April 24 at 7 p.m. in the library’s Community Room. A distinct style, a cottage garden is an informal design that uses traditional materials, dense plantings, and a mixture of ornamental and edible plants. Sally was the garden designer for Meadow View Farm in Southwick for many years before she retired. She currently freelances as a designer and gives talks on a variety of garden-related subjects. This free program is open to all and no registration is required.

 

SPRING = THE FRIENDS’ BOOK SALE: It’s spring, which means the Southwick Library Friends’ Book Sale is almost here! The Friends will be collecting books, DVDs and CDs on Saturday, April 27 from 10a.m. – 1 p.m. and also Monday & Tuesday, April 29 and 30 from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. Preview night for members of the Friends will be on Wednesday, May 1 from 5-7 p.m. Not a member of the Friends yet? You may join that night. The fee is $5.00 for an individual and $10.00 for a family. Your membership is good until December 31, 2019. The sale will be open to the general public on Thursday and Friday, May 2-3 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and on Saturday, May 4 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Money raised by the Friends of the Southwick Public Library is used to pay for library programs and purchase materials/equipment for the library.
