Western Mass Hilltown Hikers Event

April 27, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Western Mass Hilltown Hikers and Hilltown Land Trust group hike Round Top Hill in Chester, Saturday, April 27th at 10:00 am. We follow a section of Unkamit’s Path, a white blazed scenic trail which includes the top of Round Top Hill, a grassy open summit with spectacular 360 degree views, the highest point in Hampden County elevation 1,780 feet and 5th highest in Massachusetts. Hikers will stumble upon and all three Geological markers and sign the guestbook in the cache. This is a unique forest with shagbark trees, rocky outcroppings, high elevation birds and spring wildflowers. This hike has 400 foot elevation gains to the summit, be prepared for uphill climbing (downhill follows the fire road which is less steep) as well as the continuous amazing view along the edge during the decent. This is Hilltown Land Trust Conservation Land made public to hikers through the generosity of land owners.

Meet at the entrance of the Griffin Brook Road parking lot in the Chester Blandford State Forest off of Round Hill Road. Take Route 20 or Route 23 to Blandford Road in Chester (do not take Round Hill Road from route 20) turn onto Round Hill Road (Chester Town Line side), take a left at the cemetery and first right into the parking lot. You may park in front of the cemetery as well. There will be signs where to park. Plan for two hours to complete the loop. Although the trail is easily traveled and well-marked, be prepared for mud. Weather depending, bring walking sticks and spikes.

Maps and bottled water will be provided. Please be aware that there are no facilities at the trail. Dogs are welcome! No registration required, hike is free, donations are welcome!
