City police and postal authorities swooped down on a Mechanic Street resident shortly after he took delivery of a package containing more than five pounds of marijuana Friday afternoon.
Det. Lt. David Ragazzini reports that postal inspectors advised police that they had identified a suspicious package which was en route to a Mechanic Street resident and his detectives sought and obtained a warrant in advance of the delivery.
At 2:30 Friday afternoon, a squad of detectives assembled and served the warrant at 38 Mechanic St., which, Ragazzini said, is a “college house” with several tenants and many young people coming and going.
The recipient of the package, Kai Michael Chee, 22, of 38 Mechanic St., was found to be in possession of the box which contained five pounds, ten ounces of marijuana. He was also in possession of more than $1,000 in cash.
Ragazzini said that no packaging material was found and said that Chee is not believed to a have retailed the contraband.
He said that apparently Chee “would accept delivery of the package and transfer it to another party.”
Chee was arrested for possession of a Class D drug and for distribution of a Class D drug.
In a document filed Monday at Westfield District Court Det. Timothy Grady reports that witness statements indicate that Chee was a go-between and was paid $300 for each package of contraband he accepted and passed on to another person.
In court, Chee was arraigned before Judge Philip A. Contant on charges of possession of a Class D drug with intent to distribute and a drug violation near a school or park. Chee’s residence was found to be located less than 1,000 feet away from St. Mary’s school.
