BRISTOL, CT – Margaret “Peggy” Mayer, 96, devoted wife of the late Theodore J. Mayer for 58 years, died peacefully at Shady Oaks Assisted Living in Bristol CT on Thursday, September 7th, 2023. Peggy was a loving mother of four and raised her children as a stay-at-home mom. She lived to see the success of her efforts through her four children. She enjoyed playing cards and scrabble with family members and reading mystery novels. She was born May 22nd, 1927, daughter of the late Clarence R. and May (Cassidy) Smith in Queens NY. She grew up in Forest Hills NY, attended Our Lady Queen of Martyrs School and Mary Lewis Academy. She attended Berkley Secretarial School in Manhattan. After living in Stuyvesant Town in Manhattan, she moved to Ridgefield CT in 1963 where she raised her family. In her later years she made her home in Granville MA with her son and daughter-in-law.
She is survived by her four children and their spouses: Dr. Theodore (Marjorie) Mayer of St. Clair Shores Michigan, James (Virginia) Mayer of West Hartford CT, Paul (Susan) Mayer of Granville MA and Catherine (Gregory) Pings of Danbury CT. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, T Jonathan (Ana) Mayer of Torslanda Sweden; Heidi (John) McDermott of Jersey City NJ; Gretchen Mayer of Brooklyn NY; Kyle (Sarah) Mayer of Hartford, Caroline Mayer of NYC, Kate (Matt) Rice of North Kingstown RI, and Eric Mayer and Robert Mayer, both of East Granby, nine great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and her sisters-in-law Joan Smith and Dorothy Petersen.
She was predeceased by her brothers Gerard J. Smith and Clarence Michael Smith.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, September 16th, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church, Forest Hills NY. Burial immediately following at St. John Cemetery, Queens NY. Family and friends are invited to call at The Ahern Funeral Home, 111 Main Street, Unionville, CT on Friday, September 15th, 2023 between 5 and 7 p.m.
