S. DARTMOUTH, MA – George E. Martel, age 100, of S. Dartmouth MA, passed away Saturday, December 9th, 2023 at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. George was a man who treasured his family and friends and led an active life until the day of his passing. He was the husband of Joanna (Zito) Martel, to whom he had been married for 40 years.
He was born in Springfield MA, December 29th, 1922 and grew up in Westfield, the son of the late Eugene G. Martel and the late Eddith Ruth (Goodnow) McDonald. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from American International College and earned his Master’s Degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
George served his country during World War II in the United States Navy primarily aboard the USS Paul G. Baker DE-642 as a Chief Pharmacist Mate from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1946.
Mr. Martel worked in Sales with Fairview Machine from 1990-1998 and prior to that he worked with Magnat Rolls from 1980-1989, in the Texon laboratory from 1956-1980 and the Steven Paper Mill from 1953-1955.
In addition to his loving wife, George is survived by a daughter Deane Berg [James], a son Greg Martel; stepchildren Kimberly Juvinall [Larry], Glenn Juvinall and Gary Juvinall [Nancy]; grandchildren Carrie Biondi [Luke], Vincenzo Altamura, and Rachael Juvinall; great-grandchildren London and Beck Biondi.
He was also the father in-law of the late M. Gloria Martel and the grandfather of the late Kristen Burns.
