SOUTHWICK – Mabel Alice Johnson (Emerson), 1930-2024, passed away on April 29th, 2024, in Agawam, Massachusetts, at the age of 94. She was born on January 3rd, 1930, in Westfield, Massachusetts.
Mabel was a devoted follower of Christ, exemplifying her faith through daily devotions and active participation in her church community. She was a faithful wife for 71 years to her husband Howard. She was a dedicated member of the Advent Christian Church in Westfield before becoming a cherished part of the Living Hope Church family in Southwick. Mabel’s commitment to serving others was evident in her various roles within the church, from preaching and visiting the sick to assisting with church activities, cleaning – whatever needed to be done and supporting those in need through prayer. In her free time, Mabel enjoyed walking, reading, camping, and fishing. She especially treasured moments spent with her beloved grandchildren, creating lasting memories with each one. Mabel had a fulfilling career as a schoolteacher in Southwick, MA, and later in the Longmeadow, MA school system until her retirement. She was a graduate of Westfield High School and Westfield State College. The college degree came during the time when she was also a mother of three children.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Ed and Sue Johnson of Southwick, MA, and Paul and Jill Johnson of Seneca, SC, as well as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mabel was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Johnson, and her daughter, Judy Murphy.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, May 11th, at the Living Hope Church in Southwick, MA, 11:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Burial will follow in the New Cemetery in Southwick. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charitable organization supporting children in need, a cause dear to Mabel’s heart.
