Lawrence “Doc” Neil McGrath

WESTFIELD – Lawrence Neil McGrath, “Doc” (1939–2024) as he was known to most, an accomplished hockey player and coach, family man and great friend to all passed away at home on November 22, 2024, at age 85 with his loving family by his side. Doc will be missed by all who knew him. His great stature and large personality drew people to him and considered everyone a good friend.

He leaves his devoted wife of 50 years Nancy (Bedinotti) McGrath, his daughter Julie (McGrath) Veilleux and her husband Donald, his grandchildren Ashley Veilleux and her partner Garrett Beyor and Justin Veilleux and his wife Kelly, his best friend David Keaney, and extended family and friends. Doc grew up in Springfield and graduated from Technical High School. His reputation on the ice was phenomenal, and he was a big star in the high school games and was recognized as the number one highest scorer in Western Mass in 1958. Later in his life, while still playing hockey, Doc managed his team and for a short time, coached youth hockey.

Doc was not one to sit still, so his career as a local mailman brought him all over the local communities until one day; while covering a mail route for a fellow colleague, he met Nancy. It was a true love story, and Doc was dedicated to his wife and daughter. Doc was both a hockey jock and avid sport fan who got enthralled with the thrill of the game, and he was a tender and loving husband and father. In these last years, Nancy devoted herself to his care and made sure Doc could stay home with his family, the only place he ever wanted to be. His family would like to thank Johnathan and Sheila for their committed care to Doc.

Doc was predeceased by his parents John and Elizabeth (Howard) McGrath and his brother John McGrath.

His care is entrusted to Forastiere Smith Funeral & Cremation and all services are private. A celebration of life is being planned for the summer of 2025. In the meantime, we imagine Doc shot a puck right over St. Peter and made his way through those pearly gates. Doc, you will be forever missed.
