I am writing to express my gratitude to the medical staff and great volunteers at Noble Hospital. We Westfield residents are very blessed to have a wonderful hometown hospital. During a recent trip to Noble’s emergency room I was treated with respect, kindness and given exceptional care. Some hospitals and doctor’s offices make you feel rushed and unimportant. Not so at Noble. It is comforting knowing that we have a medical facility nearby which we can count on for great medical care. Congratulations and kudos to Ronald Bryant, President and CEO, his staff, and medical personnel for continuing to give us a hospital we can be proud of. Thank you!

This is addressed to the City Council members, especially Mr. Flaherty: Where do you get off constantly putting the City of Westfield residents in debt, spending our money like its water? As far as I’m concerned, none of you have any common sense as far as running the city. I personally think it should be left up to the voters to decide whether or not we want things increased or purchased because none of you know the value of a dollar. And you should be put out of office. For those of you who like to keep increasing our property taxes, why don’t you pay for it out of your own pocket, since you love to spend it on stupid stuff? Try getting educated as to what a dollar means. The Westfield News reached out to Councilor Flaherty regarding your comment and here is his response: I think you’ve got the wrong councilor. I’m one of the guys that’s always talking about controlling spending and making appropriate payments towards our long-term obligations. I’ve proposed giving taxpayers the right to vote on a Prop 2 1/2 override so that you CAN have a say in how your money is prioritized and spent.

I agree with the man who thinks dogs shouldn’t be peeing and pooping on, or even brought to, an athletic field. I’m a kid that plays on athletic fields and when I’m going to a game I don’t want to run in, look at my shoe and see, eewww, that there’s poop on it. So if you bring your dogs to the fields and they make a mess – clean it up. Or just don’t bring them at all.

A suggestion for naming the new building on the campus of Westfield State College: How about Pollecki Hall?

Westfield mayor, police chief and safety officer for the Westfield Police Department: I’m traveling south on Pontoosic Road coming out of Westfield and at the top of the hill there’s a 30 mph speed limit sign nailed to a telephone pole. Is this a legally posted sign? Is this the way you’re going to attach signs from now on so we’ll see them? I thought the speed limit was 35 mph anyways.

A few years ago I read in the paper that supply and demand in Westfield was the reason for the high price of gas. I drive outside the city at least four times a week and prices are 20 to 25 cents a gallon lower in surrounding cities. I personally think its just greed in Westfield and I will get my gas outside of this city. No more loyalty for Westfield.

Congratulations on the excellent reporting and investigation of the proposed new school. Hopefully we will not have a school on the Ashley School site. Perhaps city officials could consider swapping city owned land on the north side with National Guard and build school on Franklin St.

What wasteful spending in Westfield. I was told that a sidewalk the length of two football fields costs $35,000. This sidewalk is on Prospect Street Extension. That’s a lot of my hard earned money for this sidewalk. I guess if you ask certain politicians, anything can be done to spend money on something that is not necessary or needed. $35,000 would almost pay for a teacher. Also, guess where people walk? In the road.

Let us see… According to The Westfield News’ front page on Monday, we are going to tear down one old small school on a small lot and then replace three schools. How much space do we have left for a parking lot? I think this can be pulled off if a five or six story school was built instead of a two story building. I feel sorry for the people that live there and especially for St. Peter’s Church. What a traffic jam there will be when all the mother’s come to pick up their little darlings instead of letting them walk or take the bus. I admire the intelligent people who are protesting this mess. There is a joke that has been around for quite a while which is appropriate for Westfield: The inmates are running the asylum.

Westfield Post Office, 3:30 Monday afternoon – There are 17 people in line to get to the counter with one clerk. Can anyone figure out why they’re having financial problems?

On Monday I had an interesting experience at about 6:55 a.m. on Route 20. I was heading eastbound and heading westbound there was a kid on a skateboard weaving in and out of the travel lane, as the sun is glaring on the windshield of oncoming traffic, balancing a pizza in one hand and a soda in the other hand. If somebody unfortunately hits this character, obviously they’re at fault. But beyond that, one of our black and whites heading west bound never even batted an eye at this kid. Maybe someone should pay attention to what the youth of this city are doing, and where they’re doing it, before someone gets seriously injured. By the way, it would be nice if you would publish the phone number for the Pulse Line in the paper. I see where you managed to omit it to prevent people from calling in.

I enjoy the articles about the automobiles and was extremely interested in one the other day about safety things to do and not to do. So I wanted to bring up the fact that in the morning when it’s just starting to get a little light or raining, it’s tough to see sometime. Why don’t people put their parking lights on? The same goes for at night. Anyways, keep the articles coming and maybe all the people out there who think they know how to drive and know all the rules will learn something.

I was reading in Monday’s paper about the school being too big. Well, actually, it really is. But what are you going to do? All you can do is wait and see what happens with the traffic. I think it’s going to be one tough situation there. I don’t know who picked that area for the school… probably Mr. Sullivan. He’s on the School Committee but he doesn’t attend that many meetings because he’s too busy in Boston with Patrick and Tim “Crash” Murray. I think Mr. Sullivan should resign from the School Committee and let some yahoo take over who will attend the meetings and be up-to-date on things. Mr. Sullivan did a great job when he was mayor, I’m not taking that away from him, but Kevin Sullivan is also on the board so we have too many Sullivans in there.

When are the Westfield Community Police going to get back on their bicycles? They all look like they’re getting fat sitting there directing traffic and making those big bucks.
