The Westfield Babe Ruth Baseball 14-Year-Old All-Stars are hoping the direction is pointing up.
Westfield, which won its state tournament opener Friday night, lost to Leominster 12-4 on Saturday, but responded with a 12-2, 5-inning win over Worcester-East Side yesterday.
John Murray pitched a five-inning game for the 14s.
Westfield will need to win again tonight to stave off elimination. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
13s SPLIT: The Westfield Babe Ruth 13-Year-Old All-Stars split their weekend games, losing to Pittsfield on Saturday, 13-11, and winning an 8-0 shutout of Worcester-North yesterday. Ari Schwartz pitched a complete game to help Westfield avoid elimination.
The 13s return to action tonight in Worcester at 5 p.m.
Regardless of the outcome, the Westfield’s 13s are guaranteed a spot in the New England Regionals as the host team for the tournament, beginning Friday, July 27. All games will be played at Bullens Field.
The championship week will kick off Thursday, July 26 with a special Vintage Base Ball contest between the Westfield Wheelmen and Whately Pioneers, featuring former New York Yankees pitcher Jim Bouton. The two teams will square off in the old style format at Bullens Field, beginning at 7 p.m.
15s OUT: Westfield’s Babe Ruth 15-year-olds lost a couple of hard-fought games this weekend, signaling the end of their tournament run. Westfield lost to Pittsfield 18-15 and Worcester-East Side 6-5 in eight innings Sunday.
LEGION UPDATE: Westfield Post 124 defeated Ludlow in American Legion Baseball action yesterday behind another strong outing from pitcher Nate Barnes (5-0). Noah Parker earned the save.
Kyle Murphy (RBI single), Jeremy Tanguay (sac-RBI), and Adam Mayhew (RBI double) led the offense for Westfield (11-6). Post 124s center fielder Billy Smith threw out a baserunner at home plate with catcher Evan Moorhouse completing the play.
Westfield will return to action tomorrow against Palmer Post 130 at Jachym Field at 5:45 p.m.
