SOUTHWICK – Melvin H. Briggs, 89, of Southwick died Saturday, September 1, 2012 in the Holyoke Soldiers Home. He was born in Athol on May 8, 1923 to Walter A. and Marion (Newton) Briggs.
Melvin was a 1942 graduate of Athol, MA High School and graduated from Boston University with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. He was employed as an insurance underwriter, retiring in 1975. Melvin was a US Naval Veteran of WWII and participated in the Okinawa Campaign. He was a driver for Hilltown Senior Transportation from 1977-1992. Melvin was a member of the Southwick Congregational Church and was actively involved at the Southwick Recreational Center for many years.
Melvin was married to Barbara F.(Peck) Briggs for 41 years, who died in 1993. He leaves three sons, Jeffrey M. Briggs and his wife Paula of St. Johnsbury, VT, Richard P. Briggs and Gregory A Briggs of Southwick and a daughter, Deborah M. Read and Thomas Read of Hampden. Melvin also leaves five grandchildren; Sara, Cassidy, Joshua, Kaitlyn, and Danae.
The funeral will be held on Thursday, September 6th at 2:00 p.m. in the Southwick Congregational Church. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in New Cemetery. Calling hours will be held at the Firtion-Adams Funeral Service, 76 Broad Street, Westfield Wednesday, September 5th from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
