SOUTHWICK- Alexander F. “Al” Young, Jr., 79, a resident of this town for the past 38 years, passed away Monday, December 24, 2012 at Wingate of West Springfield, with family by his side. Born and educated in Springfield, Al was the son of the late Alexander F. and Margaret R. (Mack) Young.
Al was an inspector for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Co. He retired from Pratt in 1993 after 27 years and began his own business, selling gift items part time at local flea markets. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War, and a member of the Southwick American Legion #338. Al enjoyed spending time socializing with family and friends, enjoyed traveling which included a great trip to Europe, especially to Scotland to study his heritage, and many great times in Florida near the ocean. He also enjoyed planting and maintaining his vegetable garden.
He leaves his wife of 39 years, the former Marilyn J. Best; his children, Alexander F. Young IX and his wife Carol currently residing in Germany, Ronald D. Gardner and his companion Brenda Peters of Holyoke, MA, Susan Kellogg Aspinall and her husband Robert of Granville, MA, Victoria Torres and her husband Miguel of Westfield, MA, Kathleen Cadwell and her husband John of Blandford, MA; a sister, Dorothy Newman and her husband Robert of Clearwater, FL; six grandchildren, Alex, Christopher, Aslyne and her husband Al, Julie, Rebecca and her husband Jeremy, and Ronald, Jr.; five great-grandchildren, Jason, Jonathan, Aubrie, Haley, Madison and many nieces and nephews; also his two cats, “Precious & Sheba”.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at 12:00 noon at the Southwick-Forastiere Funeral Home, 624 College Highway, Southwick, MA. Burial will follow in the Mass. Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Agawam, MA. Family & friends may gather at the funeral home on Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon prior to the services.
