HUNTINGTON – Chester Elementary Students did such an outstanding job collecting during this year’s “Pennies for Patients” service project that the staff and PTO decided to reward them with a “Pirate Day” on Friday, March 1.
Students arrived at their assembly dressed in pirate costumes assembled at home. Each student also sported a pirate hat and eye patch, purchased by the Chester PTO. The assembly began with a presentation by the 2nd grade classroom on why it’s important to be kind to each other and how Pennies for Patients can make a difference to others.
In total, the school raised $650.00 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, which fights blood cancers. Pennies for Patients is a service learning program in which students collect spare change to help people in Massachusetts who are fighting leukemia or lymphoma.
Other events during the assembly included:
PTO president Kate Forgue drew names for $10 gift cards from Walmart for students who had turned in Box Tops for the educational fundraiser.
Chelsea Canterbury, a fourth grader, got the nod for this year’s winning tee shirt design which will be used for Field Day in June.
Each teacher in the school handed out monthly awards to their students. Pre-Kindergarten students were recognized by teacher Lynn Thompson for getting all of their work done. Kindergarten teacher Gerrie Kennedy recognized students who had completed extra reading assignments. First graders who had been bucket fillers were acknowledged by their teacher, Catherine Moriarty. Donna Sullivan recognized second graders who had a record of perfect homework completion and reading log returns. Cindy Stokowski, third grade teacher, also recognized students who had perfect homework completion, and two students who had successfully completed the 20-second multiplication challenge. Fourth grade students were called to the front by teachers Heather Cabral and Cat Hanks, for perfect 100’s on spelling tests and perfect homework completion and reading log returns.
