Friday, March 15, 2013
3:41 a.m.: motor vehicle violation, South Maple Street, a patrol officer reports a traffic stop for unlawful use of auxiliary lamps, the vehicle’s registration was found to have been revoked for lack of insurance, the vehicle was towed and the plates were seized;
4:54 a.m.: officer wanted, Dubois Street, a caller reports her former husband is at her home and wants to gather some possessions, the woman requests an officer to keep the peace as there is an assault and battery charge pending in court, the responding officer reports the man gathered some of his belongings and was advised to make arrangements to get the balance of his property at a more reasonable time;
11:05 a.m.: assist other police department, Southwoods Acres, 342 Southwick Road, an officer was detailed to assist an Environmental Police officer in the service of an arrest warrant, the officer reports the subject of the 2009 warrant was found at his home, Patrick R. Kiernan Jr., 27, of 342 Southwick Road, was arrested without incident;
11:47 a.m.: fraud, Little River Crossing, 93 S. Maple Street, a resident came to the station to report that she was victimized by an Internet scheme, see story in the Tuesday edition of The Westfield News;
12:15 p.m.: breaking and entering, Union Street, a caller reports his garage was broken into and a snow blower was stolen, the responding officer reports he found that a window had been broken to allow access to the garage, a lawn mower and a snow blower had been stolen;
3:04 p.m.: officer wanted, Claremont Street, a caller reports a tree fell on her vehicle, the responding officer reports he found that the victim had parked her car at the end of Claremont Street and Highland Avenue and had been in the vehicle waiting to pick up her son when the tree fell on top of it causing minor damage to the roof and trunk, the officer reports it is not clear if the tree was on school or private property;
4:48 p.m.: suspicious property, East Silver Street, a caller report an item in an East Silver Street yard appears to be a submarine’s torpedo, the responding officer reports a resident said that the item is an airplane fuselage which her husband has been working on since last summer, the resident said that there is nothing flammable in the fuselage;
6:37 p.m.: fire, Summit Drive, a caller reports flames coming from a neighbor’s house, the responding firefighters report a chimney fire had extended into the wall near the fireplace, the wall and ceiling were opened to access and extinguish the fire;
9:13 p.m.: suspicious vehicle, East Main Street, a patrol officer reports he observed a vehicle parked behind the Westfield Shops and observed it to be occupied, the officer reports he approached and immediately detected an odor of marijuana, the occupants were each found to be in possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, city ordinance violation citations were issued to each party and a friend came to the scene to take custody of the vehicle;

1:47 a.m.: incapacitated person, Laro Road at Laro Circle, a caller reports her husband is intoxicated and is bleeding from his head after he jumped from a moving vehicle, the man was transported to Baystate Medical Center;
9:30 a.m.: vandalism, Court Street, a caller reports vandalism to her car, the responding officer reports the complainant showed him a broken window of her vehicle and said the damage occurred overnight;
10:20 a.m.: larceny, Holyoke Road, a resident came to the station to report a registration plate was stolen from her vehicle, the responding officer reports the plate was lost or stolen;
11:41 a.m.: larceny, Main Street, a caller from a Main Street supermarket reports a shoplifter has been detained in the store, the responding officer reports the management was disinclined to pursue the matter;
5:02 p.m.: fire, Westfield State University south parking lot, a caller reports that WSU police are at the scene of an unattended brush fire, the responding firefighters report the fire was extinguished;
6:03 p.m.: fire, Russellville Road, a TTY caller reports a smoky brush fire in field near Deer Path Road, the responding firefighters report the resident agreed to extinguish the fire;
6:03 p.m.: disturbance, Main Street, an employee of a Main Street fast food restaurants reports three youths who were asked to leave because they were creating a disturbance urinated on a sign and threw a soda at the front window, the responding officer reports he spoke with three young men who admitted their actions and returned to the restaurant to clean up the mess they made;
10:21 p.m.: fire, Dana Street, a caller reports an illegal brush fire near Fairfield Avenue, the responding firefighters report the resident agreed to extinguish the fire;
11:18 p.m.: suspicious persons, Park Square, a patrol supervisor reports he spoke with a group of youths in the park after it closed for the night and advised them of pertinent city ordinances with emphasis on the restrictions regarding bicycle and skateboard use;

12:10 a.m.: suspicious person, Air National Guard Bridge, East Main Street, a caller reports a male party in the middle of the bridge has a leg over the bridge as if he may be going over the side, the responding officer reports the man was found to be in possession of a less than an ounce of marijuana and a city ordinance violation citation was issued, the officer provided the man a courtesy transport to an Agawam address;
12:49 a.m.: accident, Loomis Street, a caller reports his vehicle struck a major pothole and rolled over when it left the roadway, the responding officer reports that the stretch of roadway is chronically afflicted by potholes, the vehicle was removed;
12:58 a.m: disturbance, Arnold Street, an officer reports an Arnold Street bar is overcrowded and will be closing early, an assisting officer reports a male party was found to be highly intoxicated and was causing a disturbance, the man was placed in protective custody;
10:17 a.m.: officer wanted, Elm Street, a caller from a gas station reports a customer left with the fuel nozzle still in his tank and the nozzle was broken off, the responding officer reports the clerk said that a customer came inside to tell him that another customer with whom he had a verbal dispute drove off with the hose in his tank, the officer reports he spoke with the suspect who acknowledged being at the gas station but denied leaving with the nozzle in his tank, the officer found no damage in the area of the man’s fuel tank;
4:08 p.m.: found property, Greylock Street, a resident came to the station to surrender a folding knife her son found at the municipal playground;
5:55 p.m.: traffic complaint, East Mountain Road, an off-duty officer reports following an erratic operator on East Mountain Road, the responding officer reports the vehicle stopped after turning on to Springfield Road and the operator’s boyfriend involved himself in the situation, the officer reports the man interfered with his interactions with the cooperative operator and repeatedly disregarded instructions to get out of the roadway, Nicholas J. Distefano, 27, of 2 Maria Drive, was arrested for disorderly conduct and for interfering with a police officer;
9:00 p.m.: officer wanted, Railroad Avenue, a caller reports her brother is intoxicated and out of control, the responding officer reports the man was placed in protective custody;
9:42 p.m.: assist other agency, Elm Street, officer detailed to assist a probation officer execute an arrest warrant report the suspect was found at his home, Scott E. Taylor, 42, of 128 Elm Street, was arrested on the warrant without incident.
