WESTFIELD – Although Spring Weekend as celebrated at Westfield State University is still a week away, the college aged youths in the city seem to be getting ready for the weekend of parties and merrymaking.
And city police getting ready to deal with disturbances caused by those parties had an opportunity to practice their response late Friday evening when a Shepard Street resident called at 11:56 p.m. to complain about a nearby party.
Reserve officer Jason Williams was the first officer to arrive at the 8 Shepard Street party and was joined by full time officers Francis Gaulin and James Renaudette moments later.
The officers report that persons were leaving the address where people yelling could be heard above the sound of music but nobody would answer the door.
The officers report that a person was heard telling part- goers not to open the door and officers could see through a window that persons inside were drinking what appeared to be malt beverages from bottles and aluminum cans.
A dispatcher called the landlord and, after leaving a voice mail message, an officer was dispatched to the landlord’s Shannon Lane home to awaken him.
Officer Frank Soleimani made contact with the property owner and escorted him to his rental property.
The officers at the residence report that, after about ten minutes, a tenant opened the door and the officers gained entry.
The officers checked the identities of the party participants and, 46 of the 62 youths identified were found to be younger than the legal drinking age.
The party was dispersed and two improperly parked vehicles at the address were ticketed.
A tenant, Kevin M. Zyrkowski, 21, of 6 Windsor Drive, Hingham, was arrested for disturbing the peace and for furnishing liquor to person younger than the legal drinking age.
