WESTFIELD – City detectives are attempting to determine who owns a handgun found yesterday at a Janis Road address and how it came to be there.
A resident called police at 5:26 p.m. to report that he found a gun at the rear of his Janis Road property and Detective Daniel Gustafson reports the gun found was a .45 caliber Smith and Wesson model 457 semi automatic pistol.
Gustafson reports that his investigation of the serial number of the gun suggested two possible owners.
One was listed at a Monson address but police in that community, at Gustafson’s request, sought him at the address of record and found that he no longer lives there. No forwarding address could be found.
The second name Gustafson found led him to a man at a Feeding Hills address but, when Gustafson spoke with him, the man told Gustafson that he had never owned a gun.
The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms was notified of the found gun.
