WESTFIELD – Donald L. Sherwood, 82, of Westfield died Sunday, September 8, 2013 in Berkshire Medical Center. He was born in Chester on August 23, 1931 to Charles E. and Ora Mae (Leasot) Sherwood.
Donald grew up in Chester, graduated from Chester High School in 1949 and was a US Army Veteran of the Korean War. He retired from his favorite job as a custodian for fourteen years at Franklin Avenue School in Westfield in 1997 were he was a favorite with the children and the teachers. Prior to that he was a rate clerk at Branch Motors in Holyoke for fourteen years and prior to that he was employed at Hamilton Emery Company in Chester for twenty-two years. Donald loved to draw and enjoyed woodworking, fishing, his basset hounds and dachshunds, and plants and gardening.
He was the widower of Betty Lou (Matthews) Sherwood who died on February 15, 1997. Donald leaves two daughters, Shelly Michalczyk and her husband Michael and Lou Ann Harbert all of Westfield; a brother, Edward Sherwood of Wisconsin; two sisters, Beatrice Cowell of Lenox Dale and Blanche LaForest of Becket; three grandsons and two granddaughters and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Thursday, September 12th at 1:00 p.m. at Firtion-Adams Funeral Service, 76 Broad Street, Westfield, with burial to follow in Pine Hill Cemetery in Westfield. Calling hours will precede the service from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
