WESTFIELD – The Westfield High School boys’ basketball team wrapped up their holiday week with a bit of coal.
Westfield lost their second straight game this week, suffering a 52-46 loss to visiting Sabis on Friday night. The Bombers (2-3) were playing without starting senior point guard Billy Smith, who is recovering from a broken nose. Smith was also the star quarterback for the school’s football team.
Xavier Garcia scored 20 points to lead Sabis (2-4), and Jeff Mueller chipped in with 18.
Westfield’s Devin Wells finished with a game-high 24 points. Joe Meade had 12.
Also, on Friday night, Westfield coach Bill Daley and Sabis coach Jim Mack, a former Westfield High basketball player, honored 9/11 victim Dan Trant, a WHS grad who was drafted by the Celtics many years ago, with a moment of silence before the game.
Daley also announced that senior Matt Krutka will be granted Trant’s #12 practice jersey to wear this season.
Each year for the last nine years, a Westfield player, who has done the most for the Bomber basketball program or has worked as hard on their game as Trant. has been allowed to wear the practice jersey.
Previous honorees included: the entire Bombers’ senior class (2010-11), Dylan Willey (’09-10), Matt Pescitelli (’08-09), Adam Rivera (’07-08), Nate Disessa (’06-07), Bobby Dougenik (’05-06), Jeff Clem (’04-05), and Ryan McAndrew (’03-04).
Westfield, which was routed by Central earlier this week, will attempt to bounce back on Tuesday against New Leadership. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Elsewhere on Friday night, Gateway hosted Monson. Both local hockey teams – St. Mary’s and Westfield – were in action in an Amelia Park Ice Arena doubleheader. No results were available as of press time Friday evening.
In wrestling action, Westfield managed to defeat Thompsonville (52-30), Northwestern (69-6), and East Lyme (42-36). The Bombers fell to West Hill, 58-17.
