Westfield

Update from Rep. John Velis

JOHN VELIS

JOHN VELIS

The first week of my term flew by in a torrent of productive activity both at the state legislature and here at home. Inauguration was quickly followed by serving on my military drill weekend, reviewing and analyzing budget amendments, and casting my first vote for the autism bill. I also spent time getting out in the community meeting residents and learning what I can do to put Westfield first.
First, I’ll provide an update my work on the legislature. I filed several budget amendments aimed at securing funds to support various aspects of our community. My House colleagues and I made it abundantly clear that the budget we submit will contain no tax increases. I’m proud to be a part of this effort and honor my commitment to Westfield by holding the line on taxes.
My only disappointment related to the budget is that I was sworn in well after a resolution made in early March by my colleagues which resulted in an increase to local aid by $125 million. I fully support this measure; however, I thoroughly believe that a much greater increase in the local aid levels is required to address the needs of our local communities and to offset any potential increases in property taxes. I find myself at odds with my party in agreeing with members of the Republican Party that amendments related to local aid should have been allowed in the budget. Unfortunately I was sworn in after this vote, so my voice was not heard.
On the home front, it’s been a pleasure to continue meeting with residents and take part in community events. Last Friday, I met with Social Workers from the Department for Children and Families (DCF) who provided first-hand insight to the challenges faced by the vulnerable community members they serve. On Tuesday I was a guest at the Carson Center for Human Service, a valuable, non-profit resource that also serves our community.
Wednesday, I met with Elizabeth Preston, interim president and Ken Lemanski, vice president of Advancement and University Relations at Westfield State University to discuss ways to strengthen and expand our long standing partnership.
Thursday, my team and I joined the “Senior Options 2014” event at South Middle School. This event provided older adults and their families with an opportunity to learn about the many services available for health and wellness, safety, housing and active lifestyle options. I was happy to see so many friends and meet new ones at this event. It was also a pleasure to introduce my Legislative Aide, Neesha Suarez. Neesha and I are also a resource for the older adult community to assist in any way we can. Please feel free to reach out to us at any time.
After the Senior Options event, I met with Senator Don Humason. We discussed aspects of the 2015 budget and our mutual desire to work together on issues affecting the great city of Westfield. I’m very encouraged and look forward to working in unison with Senator Humason to put Westfield first.
In addition to the budget work, meeting with DCF staff, the Carson Center, Westfield’s older adults, the leadership at Westfield State University and Senator Humason, I wrapped up the week by taking advantage of the spring weather. Friday, I spent time at Westfield High School cheering on the Bombers. Seeing the high school athletic fields full of activity brought back memories of my days as a Bomber. I’m so proud of our kids and their achievements this season. It reinforces my commitment to enriching Westfield Schools so that our kids have every opportunity to reach their full potential. Go Bombers! I’ll be sure to get in some Voc-Tech Tiger action and to cheer on the Saints over the next week as well. Look for me at your games!
Saturday, I’ll be participating in the Noble 5k and pitching in at the Westfield River “Earth Day” clean up on Meadow St. I plan to end the day enjoying a spaghetti supper at the American Legion, followed by the honor of calling Bingo again at one of our fine older adult communities.
It’s been a busy, productive but exhilarating week. Getting out into the community with my friends and neighbors inspires me to work harder and keeps me focused on the value of putting Westfield first. As I’ve said before, it’s an absolute honor to represent the people of Westfield as State Representative. I consider your needs on every issue before me and I’m committed to making your voice heard on Beacon Hill.
Wish me luck as I head into next week. It is by far the busiest week for House members as we vigorously work on our budget and vote. As always, I thank you for the opportunity to serve. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me with your thoughts, suggestions and concerns.
On a practical note, Neesha and I are in the process of working with the State House to set up our official website and address. After I’ve completed my work this coming week, you’ll hear more from us regarding office location, hours and how to contact us. In the meantime, you can contact me or Neesha through my website: www.votevelis.com/contact_us.
