WESTFIELD – The Longmeadow High School girls’ basketball team may have trailed early against Westfield, but the Lancers surged late to defeat the Bombers, 46-33, Tuesday night.
Longmeadow doubled up Westfield over the last two-plus quarters, 36-17, with numerous inside baskets from various ball players – Taj Lewis, Jen Hurwitz, and Cady Deary made consecutive low post shots during a 6-0 third period run – and made nine free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Westfield led 16-10 early in the second quarter, and nearly stretched that lead to nine when Beka Santiago drained a 3 from the corner. But Santiago was called for a questionable traveling call.
Just when it appeared that Westfield had stretched the lead to double-digit territory, Longmeadow responded with a quick 3- and 2-pointer. The Lancers led 26-20 at the halftime break.
Longmeadow distributed the ball evenly amongst its players – Deary finished with 12, Hurwitz had 11, and Jill Scyocurka and Taj Lewis each had nine.
Carina Soto was Westfield’s most productive player, scoring 12.
St. Mary’s 42, Dean Tech 29
Shayna Page recorded a double double – 16 points and 15 rebounds – and Monica Hannoush scored 11 points to lead St. Mary’s. Saints’ Aisling Smith (2 points) collected 15 rebounds.

Rothermel places first again

CHARLEMONT – For the second time this season, Westfield sophomore Jen Rothermel won a race at Berkshire East against a large field of Western Mass skiers.
Rothermel finished first on the slalom in 37.47, just edging out Longmeadow’s Camille Burger (37.53).
“She’s just an extremely strong slalom racer,” Westfield ski coach Monique Piotte said of Rothermel. “She likes the more intense challenge of slalom. She’s great at both (Slalom and GS races) but this one seems to be her forte.”
For both slalom races this season, Rothermel has navigated the short turns sharper and quicker than the entire field.
“She can read a course better than a lot of skiers.”
As a team, Westfield placed fourth (1:08.04), while Longmeadow took first in 1:63.09.
Lauren Sheehan (9th in division, 42.43), Jen Moller (46.07), and freshman Allie Helliwell (54.07) rounded out the top four scores for the Bombers.
BOYS’ RESULTS
Longmeadow’s John Mentor won the GS race in 24.48, but Mohawk knocked the Lancers out of first place in the division to second place.
Tom Pepek (29.1), Michael Beauregard (30.02), Matt Walsh (30.43), and Liam Flaherty (31.06) were the top four Westfield skiers.
