A Place of Many Windings, is the Indian translation for Woronoco, which for nearly two centuries was a booming mill town and a quaint village boasting a school, community center, post office and store. The Russell Historic Commission has many pictures and memorabilia of Woronoco, the Utopian Community that Horace Moses created for the families who worked in his Strathmore Paper Company. These pictures are displayed in the Upper Town Hall and will be part of a book discussion at the December book club meeting. The title of the book is A Place of Many Windings, the rise and fall of a New England Mill Town by Michael Donovan. Mike grew up in Woronoco and remembers with fondness the good times on the “Avenue,” as well as his lack of paying attention in class. However, his well-researched book, beginning in the 1600’s, traces the development of a wonderful community and his excellent use of the language is proof that he did get something out of school. There will be an Open House with refreshments served on Saturday, December 8th at 1 p.m. for those who wish to view the display and the book discussion will be held on Friday, December 14 at 10 a.m. with the author present to answer any questions. Copies of the book are available at the Senior Center for $10.00 or you may call Cathy Moran (862-4769) , Ann Merritt (862-4479) or Pat Brooks (862-4066). Even if you have not read the book, the magic of the time and the community in which it takes place is worth a trip to Russell to listen. All are welcome and refreshment will be served.
