Accident on East Mountain Road with injuries causes closure (updated)

WESTFIELD—One person remains in critical condition following an accident that closed down a portion of East Mountain Road Thursday morning.

According to Westfield Police Capt. Michael McCabe, a two-vehicle accident on East Mountain Road occurred, closing off a portion of the road from Grandview Drive to Papermill Road. The accident was reported at 7:38 a.m. on Dec. 14.

One operator of a vehicle involved was transported to Baystate Medical Center via Westfield Fire ambulance and personnel for what McCabe previously described as “significant injuries.” The other operator also sustained injuries according to police, though they were reported as minor and the person had transported themselves to an area hospital.

As of 3:20 p.m. Friday, the victim with what police described as “significant injuries” was still at Baystate Medical Center in “critical condition,” according to a representative from the hospital.

According to a statement released by police, the operator whose injuries sustained were serious “appears to have lost control” of their vehicle and “crossed into the path of oncoming traffic,” striking the other vehicle involved.

The road was still closed for a portion of the morning Thursday, until police opened it later in the early afternoon.

McCabe reports that the accident remains under investigation by both Westfield Police and the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (CARS).
