WESTFIELD–Police say a Sackett Street shooting Christmas Eve that sent a 17-year-old victim to the hospital was accidental.
Westfield Police reported that the shooting, which occurred around 4 p.m. Saturday evening, involved a small .22-calibur weapon. The victim was struck with a single gunshot in the lower leg and the injury is believed to be non-life threatening.
Westfield Police Sgt. Jeff Baillargeon said that the shooter was arrested on charges of possession of firearm without a firearms identification (FID), discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, as well as reckless endangerment of a child due to the victim being 17 years old.
Police have not released the identities of the victim or the perpetrator. The incident remains under investigation.
