Amelia M. Green

WESTFIELD; Amelia (Molly) M. (Golc) Green slipped quietly and peacefully from this life to be with our Lord and her beloved and departed husband, Lt Col Robert P Green, on 30 January 2016, her life’s work done. She was born in Indianapolis, IN on 12 March 1922 to Josef Golc and Emalija (Metelko) Golc, immigrants from Slovenia, who died in 1971 and 1945 respectively, She attended Holy Trinity Elementary School and St Mary’s, a girls’ high school. She left high school, after 2 years, to help support the family of two adults and five children in the depression. While working at various jobs, she met the love of her life, a local young man. She and Robert were married on 3 May 1944 in Salina, KS where Robert was finishing 2 years of flight training as a navigator/bombardier in B-29’s. Since he made the Air Force a career, the growing family moved frequently around the USA and Puerto Rico. They raised six children who loved and respected them. She was the energetic and happy backbone of the family and often had to run the household alone when her Robert was deployed, sometimes for 6 months. When he retired from the USAF, in 1964, they settled in Westfield, where Lt Col Green was an administrator at Westfield State College. She helped him and the college in numerous ways. She was a wonderful cook, especially of her Slovenian walnut bread potica. After his retirement from the college, in 1984, they enjoyed their family, which eventually included six children, 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. They traveled around New England most weekends and made numerous trips to Europe. Throughout their lives, they had fun playing golf and bowling with their children and friends. They had a rich, loving, and full life together on earth and are now reunited in heaven. She had a great sense of humor, even when the joke came back at her. She called the house, “Green’s Monkey House,” and herself “The Zookeeper.” She answered the telephone that way once when it was a General calling to tell her that Robert had been promoted to Lt Col. The General was amused. She leaves behind six children: Robert P. Green Jr., MD, Colonel, USAF, MC, FS(ret) and his wife Mary; Colleen M. Carpenter and her husband Richard; Maureen A. Gallo and her husband James; Kathleen Jo Karnas and her husband Michael; Michael P. Green and his wife Jennifer; Kevin T. Green and his wife Sheila. She also leaves 12 grandchildren; Mary Kelly Green MD; Robert P. Green III; Heather C. Hughes; Kristen C. Wulbern; Jacob J. Bushior; Emyli A. Clark; Matthew C. Karnas; Stephanie M. Karnas; Melissa A. Houston; Caitlyn E. Warren; Michael A. Green; and Hannah E. Green. Her ten great grandchildren are; Jackson Caviness; John Wulbern; William Wulbern; Zoe Karnas; Micah Houston; Silas Houston; Eli Houston; Signe Warren; Linnea Warren; and Kasja Warren. The Zookeeper has flown to her Robert. The family also wants to thank the staff at the American Inn for the loving care they gave Mom over the years. You were a blessing. The calling hours will be held Thursday, February 4th from 9-11 am at Firtion Adams Funeral Home, 76 Broad Street, Westfield, Ma. A funeral mass will be held at 11:30 at St. Mary’s Church, Bartlett Street, Westfield followed by a burial service at The Massachusetts Veterans Cemetery in Agawam Ma. at 1 pm.
