Westfield dispatched Commerce in a quick 3-set match to improve to 4-1 yesterday. Evan Fouche (7 kills, 3 digs, 3 aces) and Jason Burnesuz (5 kills, 3 digs, 2 aces) led the Bombers, who won the home match 25-13, 25-13, 25-16.
“This is a hard-working group,” said Westfield coach Tyler Wingate. “They came in the first day of tryouts, and I could tell their work ethic was there. They play well together.”
Wingate said the team has communicated well through the first quarter of the season, building off of last season’s success.
While Westfield leaned on its top offensive threat last season, the Bombers’ head coach said he already sees better ball distribution through five games.
“We continue to get better every game,” Wingate said. “We’re definitely more balanced (this season). We have more options. Now teams don’t know where the ball is going.”
Westfield has a solid group of players that can play different positions on the court.
“This should help us down the road,” he said.
Westfield does not need to worry about the road just yet – the Bombers host Sci-Tech tonight at 5.
