The Westfield High School boys’ track and field reached a watershed moment yesterday in their head coach’s eight-plus years of coaching the Bombers.
Westfield defeated Minnechaug 73-63 in a varsity meet at Westfield State University. It was the first time in nearly a decade that the Bombers surpassed the Falcons, even if it is only for a day.
“Everybody (on the Bombers) had a great day today,” Westfield coach Ralph Figy said. “They all finally performed at the level I knew they could perform at.”
Westfield’s Juan Maysonette posted the brightest outing, winning three events – the high jump (5-10), 110 hurdles (15.65), and 200-meter dash (23.27).
John Sullivan (javelin, 130-0), Max Crabet (triple jump, 38-2 ½), Blake Croteau (2-mile, 10:07.15), Charlie Newman (100 meters, 11.79), Matt Jacobson (mile, 4:44.7), and Nick Jacques (400 meters, 53.06) also won individual events for the Bombers (3-2).
Westfield’s 4×100 relay team (Alex Martin, Quin Barbado, Newman, Crabet) and 4×400 relay team (Jacques, Jake Bellows, Pat Monet, Jacob Santangello) each won as well in times of 47.2 and 3:43.7, respectively.
“We are small, but mighty,” coach Figy said. “We don’t have a lot of depth, but we have some quality athletes.”
