CASCO, ME – Arthur Frank Smith, age 95, passed away on August 26th, 2024 of old age. He was born in New York, New York on February 20th, 1929 to the late Francis and Martha (Neunaber) Smith and had a magical childhood growing up with his three siblings at his father’s boy’s camp on the shore of Cobbossecontee Lake in Winthrop, Maine.
Arthur was proud to have served in the Army Corp of Engineers during the Korean War and had many wonderful stories about this time in Alaska. Afterwards, Arthur earned a Masters in engineering from Cornell University and worked as an Aeronautical Engineer designing helicopters for Kaman Corporation and Hamilton Standard.
He was devoted to his late wife Ann Grupe Smith, and together the raised three children while living in Granville, Massachusetts. Art loved the outdoors and spent many hours hiking the hills in Granville. He enjoyed flying gliders and spent many summers sailing along the Connecticut and Rhode Island coasts, and was also a gentleman farmer raising cattle, horses, pigs, etc. for several decades.
He is survived by his children: Karen Smith, Tracy Chamberlin, Gordon Smith; and four loving grandchildren.
A small memorial service will be announced at a future date yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, please plant something in your own garden to remember Art by.
