Author Shares Importance of Strong Female Characters

WESTFIELD-Blue Umbrella Books will host Berkshire author Paula Sharon on Jan. 19 for a discussion on the importance of strong female characters in teen fiction.
“Using examples from popular young adult and new adult literature, television and movies, Ms. Sharon will explore the social impact of this rising trend,” said Jessica Martin, owner of Blue Umbrella Books at 2 Main St.

During the 6 to 7 p.m. event, Sharon will also share her journey, and why, as a grandmother, she writes books for teens.
Sharon is the award-winning author of almost a dozen young adult novels and novellas, including “Pieces of Love,” “Heaven is for Heroes,” “On Thin Ice,” and the Holt Medallion winner “Savage Cinderella.” Her latest release is the second book in her Savage Cinderella Novella Series, called “Lost Boys.”
“Healing Waters,” released last year, completes her YA dystopian trilogy, The Chronicles of Lily Carmichael, which RT Book Reviews calls “An action-packed read with a strong female lead,” according to Martin.
When Sharon isn’t writing, she is a massage therapist, personal trainer, and Yogi, as well as a black belt in the art of Shaolin Kempo Karate and an avid kayaker, added Martin.
“Sharon’s mantra is ‘find balance in all things, and live every day to the fullest,’” said Martin, adding she is a “powerhouse of positivity and productivity.”
