SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Bail for a teenage suspect in a fatal Springfield shooting has been reduced to $5,000 after a key witness allegedly changed his story.
A judge on Monday reduced bail for 18-year-old Christopher Montgomery, who is charged in connection with the March 2015 shooting death of Rakeem Nixon. Montgomery was 17 at the time of the shooting.
Montgomery’s attorney told the judge that a prosecution witness has recanted his initial statements that he saw Montgomery shoot Nixon, and that juvenile witness faces a perjury charge.
The witness at first told police he saw the shooting, but then testified before the grand jury that he did not see it.
The prosecution said it is still waiting for autopsy results and DNA tests. The trial date was postponed until September.
