NAPLES, FL – Barbara ( Nelson) McCarthy formally of Falmouth, MA, passed away peacefully in Naples, FL on August 4, 2016 at the age of 94 . She had lived at Bentley Village Retirement Community since 1998. Barbara was born on March 27, 1922 in Westfield, MA and was the daughter of H. Ralph and Ernestine Nelson. She attended local schools and was a graduate of Westfield High School in 1940. Upon graduation, Barbara was the recipient of the Westfield High School Bronze Tablet award in recognition of her high scholastic performance and student leadership abilities. She was president of her senior class.
Barbara was an accomplished pianist and played for various choral groups during her high school and post high school years. She loved music and was a member of several choral groups.
She graduated from The Cooley Dickenson School of Nursing in North Hampton, MA in 1943. She was a 22 year employee of the Westfield School System where she served as Supervisor of Nurses. Barbara was also a member of the Falmouth, MA, Jonathan Hatch Chapter of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution).
She was known as “Barbie” to her grandchildren and was a devoted grandmother to each one of them.
She was predeceased by her husband, Richard McCarthy who died in 2010.They were high school sweethearts and were married for 66 years. She is survived by two daughters, Karen Whitney and husband Richard of Hingham, MA and Kristen Jemiolo and husband David of Poughkeepsie, NY and grandchildren, Tristan Jemiolo and Kaedin Jemiolo both of San Francisco, CA and Elizabeth Whitney of Hingham, MA. and nephews Ralph Tarnauskas of Westfield, MA and Paul
Tarnauskas of Granville, MA. She was predeceased in death by her sister,
Dorothy Tarnauskas and grandson, Ryan Whitney. Burial will be private.
