Barnes evacuated following bomb threat

WESTFIELD–A bomb threat forced the evacuation of Barnes Regional Airport Wednesday night.

A threat was called in by phone around 5 p.m. to the airport. Massachusetts State and Westfield Police responded to Barnes, with Massachusetts State Police searching the area with a K9 unit and temporarily evacuating the premises.

The search revealed no explosives.

“It proved to be a false alarm, but we have to do what we need to do,” Lee Lancaster, interim airport manager for Barnes Regional Airport, said.

Regular activity at the airport, including patrons at Papps Restaurant and Bar inside the airport, commenced by 5:45 p.m.
