Bombers, Rams eye finals

WESTFIELD – The lights are about to get a little bit brighter for two local soccer teams when the MIAA’s West Sectional tournament resumes Thursday.
On Thursday, top-seeded Westfield (12-3-3), fresh off its first quarterfinal victory in recent memory, collides with No. 4 Agawam (12-3-4) in a Division 1 boys’ soccer semifinal at Springfield-Central High School at 7 p.m.
Westfield punched its ticket to the semis with a thrilling 1-0 win over ninth-seeded West Springfield last Friday night at Bullens Field. Bombers’ sophomore Aidan Dunn scored the game-winner in the 73rd minute to keep his team’s championship hopes alive.
Some seven miles west of Central High, over at Clark Field in West Springfield, the third-seeded Southwick Rams (10-7-1) and No. 2 Wahconah (15-3-1) will meet in a Division 3 girls’ soccer semifinal.
In football action, the Westfield Bombers and Commerce Red Raiders will battle Friday night at Bullens Field. Kick off is at 7 p.m.
On Saturday, the Western Massachusetts High School Cross Country Championships will take place at Stanley Park. The race times are as follows: Girls’ D2, 1 p.m.; Girls’ D1, 1:35 p.m.; Boys’ D2, 2:10 p.m.; and Boys’ D1, 2:45 p.m.
