Bombers rout Golden Eagles in swim opener

SPRINGFIELD – The Westfield High School swim team usually eases into its regular season with some independent meets used to get their feet wet, a tune-up of sorts.
Westfield took advantage of the non-league meet to move its lineup around, get many of its swimmers involved, and still splashed the competition. The Lady Bombers trounced Central 146-39, and the boys’ team defeated the Golden Eagles 113-73.
“It was a good meet all-around,” Westfield coach Tom Lewis said.
Westfield’s girls’ team took first and second place in every race except for one, and finished 1-2-3 in many races.
Hope Walsh won a pair of races – the 100 backstroke (1:06.03) and 50 freestyle (27.32) – and along with Bridget Lewis, Jordan Jacobson, and Jenna Rowbotham, captured first in the 200 freestyle relay. Jacobson also won the 100 freestyle (59.94).
Nicole Charette also claimed first place in two events – the 200 individual medley (32.48) and 100 breaststroke. Charette, Rowbotham, Bridget Lewis, and Erin Lewis won the 200 free relay in 1:54.06.
Other individual winners for Westfield (1-0) included: Hannah Plourde (200 free), Genna Senecal (100 fly), Kelsey Veillette (diving) and Lauren Longley (500 freestyle).
Veillette’s 180.5 point total in the diving competition and Longley’s time of 5:36.86 in the 500 freestyle both earned state qualifying status.
The Lady Bombers also won the medley relay in 2:03.87. The team was comprised of Bridget Lewis, Charette, Senecal, and Rowbotham.

BOYS RESULTS
Senior captain Brendan Day won the 200 IM in 2:11.31 and helped propel the 200 free relay team (Matt Labombard, Roberto Morales, Josh Johnson, and Mike Wolak) to first (4:13.38) as well. Labombard also won the 100 free (53.84).
John Dolan took the 100 fly in 1:02.77 and the 500 free in 5:18.08; Brandon Whitman topped all divers with 170.2 points; Christopher Tu (200 free, 2:09.51) and Jimmy Stinehart (50 free, 23.42) each won an individual swim event; and, Day, Dan Parrow, Patrick Monette, and Stinehart combined to win the 200 free relay (1:42.82).
