RUSSELL – Brian P. Merrill, passed away June 24, 2013 in Hartford Hospital. Born October 15, 1955 in North Kingston, RI to William L and Martha (McCue) Merrill. He was predeceased by his father William, his uncles John A McCue and Richard Merrill.
Brian was a Quadriplegic for 38 years as a result of an automobile accident on Tannery Road in Southwick in 1975. He was a passenger when the auto struck a pole. He then spent 9 months in Boston at the University Hospital returning home to start his new life. His attitude and bravery were just amazing. Brian was always informed and involved in his care.
He started his D.J. Business and entertained many events in the area. He even did his 50th birthday. His home was always full of music. Brian was a 1973 graduate of Westfield High School and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was honorably discharged and went to work for the U.S. Postal Service (Tapley St) until the accident which changed his life.
He is survived by his mother, Martha (McCue) Merrill of Southwick; 3 sisters, Karen Cartier (Ray) of Chicopee, Leslie A Scheip (Jim) of Westfield, and Lorna Merrill (David) of CT; 6 nieces and nephews, uncles, aunts, and cousins. The family wishes to thank The Hartford Hospital Staff after the excellent care they provided, his primary physician Dr. Paul Lagac for 38 years of caring, his many friends, poker buddies in Russell, and his many caregivers; his friend and drive, Phillip, and his dog Molly Malone.
A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, June 28, at 11:45 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, Bartlett Street, followed by a reception at the Sons of Erin, William Street, both in Westfield. Calling hours are omitted.
In lieu of floral arrangements, memorial contributions to the Holy Family Church, Route 20, Russell, MA 01071 or the Shriner’s Hospital, Carew Street, Springfield. The Robert E Cusack Funeral Home, Westfield, is in charge of the arrangements.
