Brother Vincent Benedict FMS Moriarty

Miami, FL – Brother Vincent Benedict FMS (Tom) Moriarty (79), died February 25th after a short illness in Miami, FL. He was born on October 25, 1937 in Westfield, and was the son of Hazel and Jeremiah Moriarty, the former Fire Chief of Westfield.

Tom graduated from St. Mary’s High School and at the age of 17, entered the St. Joseph’s novitiate, in Tyngsboro, MA to become a Marist Brother. He recently celebrated his 60th year as a Marist Brother in 2016. Along with his 3 brothers;  Jerimiah, former Superintendent of Schools in Dudley, MA (deceased);  James of Springfield and former Principal of Armory St. School, all became educators.  His brother Edward (deceased) chose to be a mechanic.

He graduated from Marist College in 1960 and became a teacher and Dean of Discipline at Mount Saint Michael Academy in Bronx, NY, and later returned as the Director of Student Candidates.   Following his time at Mt. St. Michaels, he became a teacher at Our Lady of Lourdes High School, and became Assistant Principal of St. Agnes Boys High School in NY.  Brother Vincent was asked to travel to Kobe, Japan to become Principal of the Marist Brothers International  School. After a sabbatical year, he went on to become the Dean of Admissions at Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie, NY.  His remaining years were spent in Miami, FL at Monsignor Pace High School and Christopher Columbus High School as Academic Dean.

He will be dearly missed by all the Brothers of the Marist Community, all the many students he taught, and his family.  Donations in his memory may be sent to the Marist Brothers, 7020 Juno Street, Forest Hills, NY 11375
