Mary Sypek Graduates with Tufts University Class of 2013
MEDFORD, MA – More than 3,000 students graduated from Tufts University on May 19, during a university-wide commencement ceremony with Claude Steele, social psychologist and I. James Quillen Dean of the School of Education at Stanford University, as the speaker. The graduates from the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering included Mary Sypek of Westfield with a Bachelor’s degree in Child Development magna cum laude and Biology .
WESTFIELD – Michael Jocelyn, son of Steve and Cathy Jocelyn of Westfield, received academic honors at Westfield State University by making the University’s Dean’s List for the Spring 2013 semester. Michael will begin his senior year at Westfield State University majoring in Environmental Science with a minor in Regional Planning.
10th Grade Southwick-Tolland Regional Student Youjeen Kang Accepted to Early College
GREAT BARRINGTON – It’s not every day that 10th graders are accepted to college before finishing high school. But for one Southwick, MA, sophomore, that’s exactly the case. Youjeen Kang earned a place in the Bard College at Simon’s Rock fall 2013 entering class.
Kang’s academic and personal achievements secured her a spot at Simon’s Rock this fall. The campus in Great Barrington, Massachusetts is home to over 400 bright and highly motivated students engaged in a rigorous college education. Early college students are on track to graduate from college one or two years ahead of their peers.
“Simon’s Rock receives a number of impressive applications every year,” Jamie Hobba, director of Admission said. “In a highly selective process, Youjeen’s remarkable academic and extracurricular achievements stood out.”

Kappa Delta Pi, International Honor Society in Education, founded by Dr. William Bagley in 1911 at the University of Illinois, was established to foster excellence in education and promote fellowship among those dedicated to teaching. The founders chose the name from the Greek words to represent knowledge, duty, and power. Pioneering from its beginning by including women as well as men, Kappa Delta Pi grew from a local chapter to the international organization it is today, comprising 600 chapters and more than 40,000 members.

Alexandra Lynch Named to Dean’s List at Plymouth State University
PLYMOUTH, NH – Alexandra Lynch of Westfield has been named to the Plymouth State University Dean’s List for the spring 2013 semester.
To be named to the Dean’s List at Plymouth State, a student must achieve a grade point average between 3.5 and 3.69 during the spring semester and must have attempted at least 12 credit hours during the semester. These credit hours must be in courses that earn grade points and the student must have completed all such courses attempted.

The award recognizes students who demonstrate a commitment to leadership in volunteer service and academic achievement. Saint Michael’s, located in Burlington, Vermont, one of America’s top 10 college towns, was founded on the belief that serving others is part of its Catholic tradition, and through the award seeks to honor those who demonstrate the true spirit of volunteerism.
Award recipients, named at schools throughout the country, are high school juniors who are inductees of the National Honor Society or an equivalent school-sponsored honors organization. They must demonstrate a commitment to service activities in high school or community organizations, taking leadership roles in these activities.
Winners were presented the book First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers (HarperCollins 2000) by Loung Ung, a 1993 Saint Michael’s College graduate who has become a widely acclaimed author. In “First They Killed My Father,” Ung gives a powerful autobiographical account, from a child’s perspective, of surviving captivity during the genocidal Pol Pot regime in Cambodia. She reveals an indomitable spirit in the face of profound suffering, including the loss of both her parents and two of her siblings. Ung has written a riveting memoir about a family’s survival, and in turn, about the development of Ung’s on-going crusade for a landmine free world.

Johnson Guides Tours at Susquehanna University
SELINSGROVE, Pa. — Abigail Johnson, of Granville, Mass., is working as a student tour guide this year at Susquehanna University.
To become a tour guide, students must complete a written application and personal interview with the admissions staff. Once selected, students complete an intensive training program, followed by additional training sessions throughout their time on the job. Training includes shadowing veteran tour guides, becoming familiar with the admissions process and frequently asked questions, learning to present important information during the tour and preparing to deal with challenging situations that may arise while giving a tour.
Johnson, a junior majoring in neuroscience, is a 2011 graduate of Northwest Catholic High School and the daughter of Don Johnson and Martha Lilja-Johnson.
AMHERST – Approximately 5,500 students received undergraduate degrees from the University of Massachusetts Amherst this spring. Commencement ceremonies were held May 10, 2013 at the Warren P. McGuirk Alumni Stadium.
