WESTFIELD: Carmen Nuñez, 86, (1935-2022) died peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Cayey, Puerto Rico to Conrrada Vasquez and Restito Gonzalez on July 16, 1935.
Carmen attended the school of Life, leaving the safety of her family and friends to join her husband Hipolito in the US in 1954 to forge a better future for themselves. Together they worked hard and raised their 10 children in Westfield. She was a devoted wife, a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend. Carmen was kind, caring, outgoing, funny, active and hardworking. In her younger years she worked as a farmworker on the tobacco fields and eventually became a compassionate and caring home healthcare provider to elderly family and friends. At home she was all about cooking and making sure if you came to visit you were fed. Carmen’s passion was gardening and she took great pleasure in showing you her vegetable and flower gardens, including the many bird feeders. She also enjoyed her many trips to Foxwoods with our “Uncle Joe.” She was a life-long member of St. Mary’s Church and her devotion to her faith was her strength throughout her lifetime.
Carmen was predeceased by her husband, Hipolito Nuñez Delgado and her son, Felix Nuñez. She leaves her nine children, Carmen Nuñez y Gonzalez and her husband Enrique Colon, Ana Nuñez and her husband Art Demas, Isabel Castro and her husband Gabino, Hipolito Nuñez Jr., Martin Nuñez, Rosita Nuñez (all of Westfield, MA), William Nuñez and his wife Rebecca of Arkansas, Frank Nuñez and his wife Colleen of Southwick, MA, Carlos Nunez of Irvine, Texas and her daughter-in-law, Ann Nuñez of Falmouth, MA. Carmen was the grandmother of 18, Yolanda, Daniel, Israel, Jonathan, Joshua, Alisa, Julie, David, Marisa, Adiana, Lucas, Laura, Kali, Nathaniel, Sofia, Stephanie, Casi, and Celina. She was the great-grandmother of 20, Nicolas, Amelia, Daniel Joseph, Daxton, Colby, Lenox, Nia, Nuala, Adriana, Alessandra, Dante, Olivia, Andrew, Alicia, Landon, Logan, Leah, Layla, Caleb and Quinn, great-great-grandmother to Melanie.
Carmen was loved by all who knew her and she will be missed by her family and friends, but we take solace in knowing she is at peace. The family is very grateful to those very close friends who offered their companionship and prayers to our mother during her last few weeks of life. We would like to thank Andrea Rakaska, RN and Sher Sweet, Chaplain from Baystate Hospice, for their care, comfort and support during these past few months.
