FLORIDA – With friends and family at his side, Dr. Carolino A. Centeno (1933-2023) recently passed away at his home in Florida. He was 90 years old.
Dr. Centeno was born March 1st, 1933 to Honorable Isaac A. Centeno and Asuncion Centeno in the town of Lapog in Ilocus Sur province in the Philippines. His decision to become a physician came early while in the third grade.
He graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine and continued his education and medical training at Harvard Medical School and Yale School of Medicine in areas of cancer, vascular and general surgery. Dr. Centeno completed his internship at Griffin Hospital in Derby, CT, before moving on to St. Raphael’s Hospital in New Haven, CT for his Residency in General Surgery.
Dr. Centeno and family located to Westfield, MA where for 38 years he served the greater community from Noble Hospital in Westfield and Mercy Medical Center in Springfield, MA.
He and first wife, Gloria [Arcellana] Centeno became US citizens in 1972 and were parishioners of the Holy Trinity Church in Westfield. Gloria passed away after a car accident on her way home from routine errands.
Carol or Doc, shared a love of the outdoors with his children and friends. He was a member of the Westfield Sportsman’s Club and an occasional fisherman on the Westfield River. Carol was a self-taught pianist learning to play by ear and in doing so, made popular songs and Broadway standards part of his repertoire.
Dr. Centeno is survived by his wife, Cynthia [Reyes] Centeno, and his 5 children with Gloria: Carlo Centeno and his wife Mary Jane, Longmeadow, MA; Jose Centeno and his wife Marites, Westfield, MA; Galen Centeno, MD and his partner Jeanette, Edison, NJ; Raphael Centeno and his wife Su San, Westfield, MA; and Montserrat Centeno, Holyoke, MA.
He’s also survived by 5 grandchildren: Nicole and husband Henry, Brooklyn, NY; Courtney and her husband Tom, Philadelphia, PA; Amanda, Edison, NJ, Amber, Westfield, MA; Gabriel, Westfield, MA; and 5 great-grandchildren: Grover, Caleb, Charlotte, Eloise and Francisco.
A memorial mass will be held on November 4th, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church in Westfield, MA.
