WESTFIELD – Charles F. Smith, 84, (1932-2017) passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2017 at Genesis at the Westfield Center. He was born in Holyoke to the late John H. and Ruth (Dillon) Smith. He was a graduate of Holyoke High School and Westfield State University, receiving his Master and Doctorate from UMASS. Charles was a Professor at the University of Southern Maine for many years. He served his country with the United States Navy from 1952-1956 during Korea, attained the rank of AT-3 and received the China Service Medal, Navy Air Crew Insignia, and National Defense and Good Conduct Medals. Charles was a member of the Knights of Columbus, VFW and National Teachers Association. Charles was predeceased by his daughter, Catherine Smith and is survived by his three sons, Charles F. Smith, Jr. of Thousand Oaks, CA, Daniel J. Smith and his wife Cinthia of Temecula, CA and William W. Smith and his wife Sarah of Westbrook, ME, his brother Daniel Smith of Westfield, sister Noreen Koehler of Florida and 8 grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, February 10th at 1:30PM in St. Mary’s Church, 30 Bartlett St., Westfield. Burial with Military Honors at 3PM in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main St. Agawam, MA 01001. Arrangements are under the direction of the Firtion Adams Funeral Home, 76 Broad St., Westfield, MA 01085.
