City, MassDEP and Air National Guard to provide update on water

WESTFIELD—The city will be holding a public forum April 25 to discuss the ongoing water concerns within the city.

City officials, as well as representatives from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) and the Air National Guard, will meet with the public to try and address concerns, answer questions and inform the public of the ongoing efforts of each group. The forum will take place at 6 p.m., in room 201 of Westfield City Hall.

“The process so far has been to be as transparent as possible,” Westfield Mayor Brian Sullivan, said. “We thought that with everything going on with the groups it would be appropriate to get together and answer questions so people are getting the true information.”

Sullivan said that the three groups have worked cooperatively thus far, and have encountered no problems regarding their collaborative processes. He also said that this may be the first of several meetings to address the water concerns going forward.

According to Sullivan, MassDEP will be providing updates on their plans to have private wells tested, the Guard will be updating on the testing going on at Barnes Regional Air Base and city officials will provide updates on the water filtration systems that are being designed for the city.
