County counterdrug program launched

SPRINGFIELD (WWLP) – The Hampden County District Attorney’s office is partnering up with the state’s National Guard to keep drugs out of local communities.
The office will soon start working with the state’s National Guard to launch a counterdrug program. The program is expected to help fight back against the area’s drug problem.
On Friday, Hampden County DA Anthony Gulluni signed an agreement to bring the program to the county.
He said the counterdrug program could help put an end to drug trafficking and distribution.
The National Guard will be assisting state troopers who work out of the DA’s office. They’ll use data collection and analysis to help the Hampden County Narcotics Task Force.
“This program will allow us to put to use the resources of the National Guard and the Department of Defense in my office in our efforts to interrupt drug traffic and drug distribution,” Gulluni said.
He also said this program won’t put any military on our streets.
Under the agreement, members of the National Guard will set up “counterdrug information systems,” to deal with drug trafficking and distribution.
One member of the state’s National Guard will also be working full-time with the State Police Detective Unit in the DA’s office.
The Hampden County High Impact Strike Force will also be involved in the program.
The Strike Force was created earlier this year to find the people responsible for trafficking and distributing drugs in Hampden County.
Gulluni called the program an aggressive way to deal with drug addiction in the county, and across the state.
