SPRINGFIELD – Westfield State sophomore Ashley Craig set a school record in the pole vault to help the Owls’ women’s track and field team win the Springfield Classic track and field meet on Saturday.
Westfield won the 14-team meet with a score of 102. Coast Guard was second with 96 points, and Wheaton third with 89.5.
Craig cleared 3.66M or 12′-0″ in the record setting vault, surpassing her own outdoor mark of 11′-10″.
The result caps an eventful week for Craig, who was originally believed to have set a record last week before a scoring error was revealed after the meet that officials had not set the bar at the announced height.
Craig’s winning vault highlighted a group of solid performances for the Owls.
In the 1500, Westfield State got a 1-2 finish from Ashley Monahan and Jessie Cardin, with Monahan edging her teammate by .62 seconds in 4:48.27.
Senior Naloti Palma won the discus with a throw of 44.20m (145′-00″) just two inches shy of her own school record. Palma had a runner up finish in the shot put with a toss of 12.48m (40′-11.50″) on her final throw of the afternoon, and placed fifth in the hammer throw.
Senior Meg McNamara placed third in the 100 hurdles in 15.69 and fourth in the triple jump with a hop, skip and jump of 10.46m (34′-04.00″).
