WESTFIELD – An elderly woman found near Lockhouse Road Monday has been identified as Phyllis Craig, 89, of 160 Lockhouse Road.
Police were alerted shortly after noon Monday that a worker from a nearby business had found what appeared to be a deceased person on the ground near railroad tracks behind his company.
Police and firefighters both responded and the Fire Department EMTs reported that they found an elderly woman who was deceased.
There was no obvious cause of death and Det. Roxann Bradley said later she found “There was no foul play, nothing suspicious, no trauma”.
The police investigation led them to the woman’s sons, one of whom, Jeffrey Craig, lives in the city, and identified his mother.
Craig told police that he lives in a separate residence on the same property as his mother who he said suffered from dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease.
He said that he visited with his mother every evening when he brought her supper and he last saw her Monday morning before he left for work.
He said that he checked on her when he returned Monday evening and called police when he did not find her at her home.
The woman was found wearing day clothing that was not appropriate for the cool weather and may have expired due to exposure.
“She must have wandered out the back door” Bradley said.
