Democrat Goldberg elected Massachusetts treasurer

BOSTON (AP) — Democrat Deb Goldberg has been elected Massachusetts treasurer, defeating Republican Mike Heffernan and Green-Rainbow candidate Ian Jackson.
The 60-year-old Goldberg will fill the seat being vacated by state Treasurer Steve Grossman, who opted not to seek re-election and instead launched a failed bid for the Democratic nomination for governor.
One of the treasurer’s jobs is to oversee the state lottery, which is facing possible revenue threats from new casino developments and online gambling.
During the campaign, Goldberg said she supported repeal of the state’s casino and was wary of bringing the lottery online.
Goldberg served six years on the Brookline Board of Selectmen and won a three-way Democratic primary. She has called for increased public financial literacy, affordable higher education and apprenticeship programs to help close the state’s skills gap.
