WESTFIELD – Come spring, the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail will be a bit more colorful thanks to the volunteer efforts of Cub Scout Den 5 of Pack 108. The group of eight and nine year old boys, along with their Den leaders, planted a bed of daffodil bulbs across from the trail head parking area at Shaker Farms Country Club, Wednesday, November 14. The bulbs were provided by the Friends group.
Currently working on their Bear Badge (specifically Achievement 6, Taking Care of Your Planet), the group was inspired to give back to their community as a result of a recent weekend trail ride.
“We wanted to play a bigger part as a Den in the development and maintenance of the trail,” said Jacky Fouche, Den leader. “The boys are excited about this project, as well as to staying involved with the trail.”
“We are extremely grateful to Den 5, Pack 108 for their energy, enthusiasm and partnership,” said Jeff LaValley, Chair of the Board of Directors for Friends of the Columbia Greenway Rail Trial, Inc. “Any opportunity to bring together groups with similar interests, and a desire to beautify the community–in this case, the trail–is definitely a win-win,” LaValley said.
Volunteers from Den 5, Pack 108 included: Shea Byrnes, Matthew Collins, Mike Collins, Billy Fouche, Collin Freeman, Derek Gomez, Cameron Hoynoski, Race Kiniry, Cameron Klee, Jimmy Krupienski, and Aidan Thomas. The boys were assisted by Den leaders Bill and Jacky Fouche.
Friends of the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail, Inc. welcomes contact from groups, organizations or businesses wishing to be part of future beautification, trail enhancement, and maintenance efforts.
