Students and faculty at Westfield Vocational Technical High School will once again join others across the nation during the month of February to celebrate Career Vocational and Technical Education (CVTE) Month. This year’s theme celebrates Career Vocational and Technical Superheroes. CVTE Month provides CVTE programs across the country an opportunity to demonstrate how CVTE educates students to be college and career ready and prepares them for high-wage, high demand career fields. Our school has planned a week of daily activities to commemorate CVTE Month from February 10 – February 14.
The weeklong celebration kicks off on Monday, February 10 with the Mayor’s Coffee Hour at 8:00 a.m. in Tiger’s Pride followed by tours of our programs for interested community members. On Monday, February 10 and Tuesday, February 11, we will be giving shop tours for students from North and South Middle Schools. Also on February 11, WVTHS will honor two of our own CVTE Superheroes with a Hall of Fame Induction Luncheon in Tiger’s Pride at 11:00 a.m. Corey Degray, class of 1964, and Sandra Lajewski, class of 1990, will be recognized for their advocacy of Career Vocational Technical Education as well as their dedication to WVTHS and the community. Our Annual Open House will be held on Wednesday, February 12 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. and is open to prospective students as well as members of the local community. Finally, on Friday, February 14, our students will be visiting classrooms at Abner Gibbs Elementary School to promote literacy and to talk about their CVTE program experiences. The activities planned over the week illustrate the rigor and relevance CVTE courses offer our students.
For over 100 years, the City of Westfield has recognized career vocational and technical education as an integral part of its public school system. Today, CVTE is a major part of the solution to myriad national economic and workforce problems, such as high school dropout rates and global competitiveness. At a time when job opportunity is so critical, CVTE programs in every community are ensuring students are adequately equipped with the skills to successfully enter the workforce. By partnering with local business and the community, our CVTE programs are investing in students’ lives with the latest technology and skills that will prepare them to become successful employees as well as future leaders.
