April has been recognized as Donate Life Month across America since 2009 and this year the Select Board will be honoring Susan A. Sanders. Sanders, who passed away in February, was a long-time Southwick resident and an active part of the community.

Sanders’ husband, Kirk, is a Sergeant in the Southwick Police Department and has been running the Citizens Police Academy since 2001. Since that time, Susan Sanders helped her husband organize and run the Citizens Police Academy as well as the town’s D.A.R.E. program.

“We’re proclaiming tomorrow to be Susan A. Sanders day in her honor,” said Select Board Clerk Russ Fox.

On Tuesday, town officials will raise the flag outside of the town hall to honor Sanders. Fox is encouraging businesses and town departments to raise their flags as well.

In 1992, Donate Life America was founded as a non-profit organization that was dedicated to educating and advocating for organ, eye, and tissue donations.
