Westfield – Doug, 93, was born in Springfield, Mass on September 5, 1926 to James and Gertrude (Wood) Roberts. He attended school in Springfield and Graduated from Technical High School in June of 1944.
He served in the U.S. Navy in WW II and was stationed in the Philippines when the Atomic Bomb was dropped on Japan. After discharge, he attended and graduated with a BS from American International College in 1950 and received his Master’s from Westfield State College in 1963. Doug is a Retired School Teacher, who taught History and French in the Southwick, MA Middle School. He accompanied Southwick High School Classes on Tours of France, Switzerland and Italy on the 1970’s. He was a member of the Choir at the Westfield United Methodist Church for over 60 years. He met his wife Lois there. Doug sang with the Greater Westfield Choral Group until he was 84. They traveled in 1990 and 1998 with the Chorus on European Tours. He retired as an accomplished Tenor singer and was given a plaque from the United Methodist Church at 88 years of age! Doug loved to sing on many occasions!
Doug celebrated his Scottish Heritage by belonging to several Scottish Organizations including the Glasgow Lands Festival at Look Park. When his 96 years old Brother John was in a nursing home they would sing Scottish folk songs together to family and other patients. He was a 60 year plus member of Mount Moriah Lodge of Masons in Westfield, a Life Member of the American Legion in Westfield, the Tuesday Morning Music Club of Springfield, and a longtime member of the Retired Men’s Group meeting at Friendly’s monthly. Doug leaves his three children, Doug, Jr of Westfield, Jane Gimigliano and her husband Ron of Export PA, and Marion of Westfield. He had 5 Grandchildren and 3 Great-Grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at The First United Methodist Church 16 Court St Westfield, MA 01085 at 1pm on Saturday March 10, 2018. Gathering will be prior to the service at the church with light refreshments afterwards.
