SOUTHWICK – There has been another update to the town water meter project by DPW Director Randy Brown.
According to Brown, the contractor for the project, East National Water, has reported that they are anywhere from 15% to 20% complete. Brown and East National Water are having weekly conference calls throughout the duration of the project in order to track and monitor progress.
In town daily, East National Water is installing between 14 and 16 water meters a day at residences.
As the project breaks up the town into four regions, the contractor is currently on the second region right now. That region includes Congamond Rd. and all other streets that surround Congamond Lake.
Brown mentioned that East National Water is getting close to being done with the second region and will continue to move forward.
“Within the next week or two, they’ll be moving on to the next region,” said Brown.
The DPW will be sending out cards to all residents in the third region so they can be aware that the project is headed their way. Region three is the Northeast quadrant of town, which includes Foster Rd., North Longyard Rd., sections of Feeding Hills Rd., and all neighborhoods off of those main roads.
While the water meter project is a long process, Brown is certainly satisfied with how things have gone thus far.
I don’t think they’ve (East National Water) had any significant issues to hold them up,” said Brown. “They’re cranking them (meters) away at a pretty good pace.”
The Westfield News first reported on the water meter project on Sept. 17. It was noted that residential meters are up to 20 years old. At a town meeting two years ago, Brown was able to secure local appropriated funds of up to $1.4 million for this project.
It is mandatory that every home throughout Southwick gets their old water meter replaced with a new one and up to 2,600 water meters will be installed in total.
If a resident is aware that their region is up to get their meter replaced, they can make an appointment with East National Water at (800)-252-8556. Any questions or thoughts for the DPW, Brown can be reached at 413-569-3040, ext. 308.
