Portsmouth, RI: Dr. John Vincent Kane, Jr, 82, died Friday, October 2, 2020 surrounded by his family at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston. Vinny, as he was known, was born in Westfield on March 31, 1938, the second child of J. Vincent and Mary (Keyes) Kane. He attended Saint Mary’s Elementary and High School, Boston College, and Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. He set up a family dental practice on Court Street in Westfield where he served his community for 32 years until his retirement in 1998. A communicant of Saint Mary’s, for many years he was an active member of the Cursillo Movement and a former President of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society of St. Mary’s. He was a charter member of the Sons of Erin and loved to read, sing, and play the guitar or banjo. Having been a life-long resident of Westfield, three years ago he moved to Portsmouth, RI to live near his daughter Norah.
Vinny was predeceased by his loving wife of 46 years, Dona Morrissey Kane, in 2012. He leaves behind his children Bridget Matthews-Kane and her husband Tim Matthews of Westfield, Sheilah Kane-Weiss and her husband Juan Carlos Weiss of Chappaqua, NY, Norah Kane-Daly and her husband Michael Daly of Portsmouth RI, and John Vincent Kane III and his wife Michele (Higgins) Kane of Franklin MA. He was predeceased by his parents but is survived by his two siblings: Ellen Marie (Kane) Onofrey and Dr. Richard Kane and his wife Maureen, all of Westfield. Vinny also leaves behind his in-laws: Joyce Morrissey Donohue of Woodbridge, VA; Sr. Jane Morrissey of Springfield, MA; Anne Cressotti and her husband Frank of Southampton, MA; Richard Morrissey and his wife Pamela of West Springfield, MA; Sheila Spencer and her husband Steve of Leesburg, FL; and Mary Chris Cressotti and her husband Karl of Cheshire, CT. Vinny is additionally survived by his grandchildren: Fionnuala, Niamh, Declan and Deirdre Matthews; Diego and Esmeralda Weiss; Fiona and Liam Daly; and Stella and John Vincent Kane IV; along with numerous nieces and nephews. He leaves, as well, his companion Lorraine Bordonaro and many other good friends at The Atria in Portsmouth, RI. He was dearly loved by his family and his many friends and will be greatly missed by all.
Firtion Adams is in charge of arrangements. There will be a funeral Mass at St. Mary’s Church in Westfield at 10:30 AM on Friday, October 9th. Due to COVID-19, the children, grandchildren, siblings, in-laws, nieces and nephews of Vin and Dona Kane will attend Mass in the upper church. All others are invited to attend the simultaneous broadcast in the lower church. Burial will follow the service. The family thanks everyone for their cooperation and understanding during these difficult times. Memorial contributions can be made to the Homework House of Hermano Pedro of Holyoke or the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Saint Mary’s in Westfield. The family requests no flower arrangements.
