Early morning fire displaces 15, according to Westfield Fire Chief

WESTFIELD–A two-alarm fire on Mechanic Street Friday morning sent three to the hospital for treatment, and displaced 15 residents, according to Westfield Fire Chief Mary Regan.

The fire occurred around 5:15 a.m. and caused the displacement of three families from a multi-family unit at 67 Mechanic St. Regan said that 13 total people were transported to the hospital but only three were treated for possible injuries. Regan said that there were working smoke detectors that alerted the residents.

“We are very happy that the smoke detectors activated,” Regan said. “No question this could have been a much worse outcome.”

Currently, the fire is currently under investigation by the Westfield Fire Department and the state fire marshal but it is not considered to be suspicious, according to Westfield Deputy Chief Eric Bishop.

According to Regan, when firefighters first arrived on scene there was “a lot of fire” coming from the structure. She said that fire personnel first searched the residence to see if anyone was inside, then did an “initial attack” of the fire.

Regan said that all occupants made it out of the home before personnel arrived, however.

The three treated at the hospital were two children and one adult. The other 10 transported to the hospital by Westfield Fire paramedics via ambulance went “in an effort to keep the families together,” said Regan. She added that two residents stayed behind at the fire.

Regan said that the American Red Cross is assisting the families following their displacement.
